I am keeping this post at the top until after election day. To see recent "family" posts please scroll down belowProposition 8 states that Marriage in the State of California is between a Man and a Woman. It in no way attacks gay couples. It does not take away any rights or benefits of their partnerships. It does however have an effect on my rights. Let me tell you some of the reasons why I support Proposition 8.
First and foremost - It is NOT because I am not tolerant of Gays and want lots of hate mail :) I can love others, and teach my children to love others, without having to compromise my standards or beliefs.
Second - It should be MY responsibility as a parent to teach my children about Gay relationships. It is a moral issue to me and not something that is the public school systems responsibility. If Proposition 8 does NOT pass (a NO vote), the public school system will put gay marriage on equal footing with traditional marriage, and my children will likely receive “age appropriate” information about sexual relations within heterosexual and homosexual marriages. This is already being done in Massachusetts, and parents have no right to object.
Third - Are we going to let 4 judges tell us that the voice of the people doesn't matter? In 2000, 61% of Californians voted in favor of traditional marriage. 4 judges in San Francisco decided that the voice of the people didn't matter and that they were going to overturn this. This says that ultimately what the voice of the people vote for DOESN'T MATTER! If you are not against gay marriage, you SHOULD be against your vote being overturned because a few judges from San Francisco don't agree. What could they take from us next?
Fourth - If this does NOT pass (a NO vote), over time churches and businesses could be forced to accept non-traditional marriages or face legal actions. In California we are already hearing of cases where churches are facing being sued if they refuse to marry gays, doctors are being sued if they refuse to artificially inseminate lesbians because of religious beliefs. What this says is, you MUST obey what the State says regardless of your own moral guide. This could be detrimental to our State. Ultimately Churches could be forced to leave the State when they won't bend. We could lose Doctors and other medical professionals that are already in short supply.
I have been overwhelmed by how many people are in support of this proposition in our community, as our church has polled our friends and neighbors. The majority truly support traditional marriage. This is not San Francisco and the voice of small populations such as this can make a difference come election day.
Californians need to take a stand and Vote YES on Proposition 8. It protects children, it protects the voice of the people, it protects the family.
